Dry skin is a common problem in infants and children. The condition affects around 17% of children.
❇️ Causes
🔹 Genetic
🔹 Washing hand / face frequently
🔹 Bathing too often
🔹 Winter season
🔹 Living in hot room
🔹 Harsh soap
🔹 Medical disorder like Diabetes, Hypothyroidism.
❇️ Symptoms
🔹 Skin look rough
🔹 Scaling or peeling
🔹 Itching
🔹 Gray, ashy skin
🔹 Redness
❇️ Complications
🔹 Atopic dermatitis
🔹 Infection
❇️ Prevention
🔹 Before bath
▪️ Oil massage half an hour before bath, use coconut oil or olive oil
🔹 During bath
▪️ Use mild soap with PH 5.5. Apply enough soap to remove dirt, don't make thick leather. Avoid soap whenever possible.
▪️ Use lukewarm water, avoid hot water
▪️ Bath time should be less than 10 minutes.
🔹 After bath
▪️ Dry skin by patting, not by rubbing.
▪️Moisturizer
# Apply moisturizer all over the body.
# Use twice a day.
# If not possible due to cost, apply on face, hand and leg. Apply malai (milk) on the rest of the body.
🔹 Avoid other skin products
🔹 Clothes
▪️ Choose non irritating clothes preferably cotton.
▪️ Always wash clothes in clean water after washing clothes in detergent. Then dry under the hot sun.
▪️ Avoid woolen cloth directly on skin, use cotton shirts before wearing woolen clothes.
▪️ Avoid over dressing, it is better to dress them in layer. Remove the upper dress or jacket , to avoid sweating.
🔹 Wear gloves particularly during winter season.
🔹 Give protein rich, Vitamin A and Zinc rich food.
🔹 Take supplements if your Dr prescribe.
❇️ When to consult Dr
🔹 Intense itching
🔹 Papule or pustule on skin
🔹 Crack on skin
🔹 Patches of skin that are red or painful.
