WEIGHT OF THE CHILD NOT INCREASING (AGE- 2 TO 10 YEAR); CAUSES, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

MY CHILD IS WEIGHT IS LOW (AGE 2 TO 10 YEAR)


During this age group, the weight of the child increases slowly. It was advisable to compare weight with height for assessment of growth on the growth chart. If a child is not gaining weight then it can have serious implications on overall health.

Remember...  Proper evaluation and diagnosis is key in the treatment.

❇️ Normal development

🔹 Weight of child increases by 1.5 to 2.5 kg per year between 2 to 5 year of age.

🔹 Weight of the child increases by 2 to 3.5 kg per year till puberty.

❇️ Causes of failure to thrive

There are the following reasons....

🔹 Poor intake 

🔹 Giving few recipe. 

🔹 Poor absorption of food like celiac disease.

🔹 Burning too many calories like child  playing throughout the day.

🔹 Repeated infection

🔹 Chronic diseases like heart, renal or metabolic disorder.

In short...  Knowing the exact cause helps in treatment.

Home made snacks like Laddu made in ghee with nuts, fried snacks

▪️ Lunch 

# Chapati (ghee or butter) + vegetables with curd (sugar). 

# Dal + Rice with curd and papad

# Chapati with chicken or mutton.

▪️ Afternoon snacks

# Fruit salad 

# Fruit juices with added sugar

# Homemade ice cream

▪️ Dinner same as lunch 

▪️ Before sleep

# Milk with protein or egg # Nuts or cheese.

▪️ Medicine

Consult Dr for supplementation

🔹 Prevention of repeated illness

▪️ Water borne disease   # Drink boiled water

# Avoid outside food

# No cockroach or bees in kitchen

# Washing hand before eating

▪️ Air borne illness

# Cover mouth and face while going outside

# Avoid school if your child have cold & cough

▪️ Mosquito borne illness

# Cover water tank or don't keep water open

# Close all window with net

# Use mosquito repellent

▪️ Vaccination

Take all vaccines for prevention of illness.

❇️ Slow growth pattern

Sometimes, a perfectly healthy child simply gains weight slowly because it's just his or her own unique growth pattern. 

A child who is a natural slow gainer still gains weight steadily, though slowly and shows following characteristics....

▪️Stays on a particular growth curve

▪️Grows in length and head circumference according to weight

▪Child is playful

▪️ Urine output is normal 

▪️ Milestone are normal
