DELAYED SPEECH IN CHILDREN


Delayed speech is the most neglected milestone as a lot of Indian don't know normal milestones and they are more concerned with physical development. And of course, a lot of their family members spoke late so they neglected delayed speech problems. If your child's speech is delayed ( Please know age appropriate normal milestone), it doesn't mean something is wrong but you cannot ignore it as it could be a sign of major neurodevelopmental disorder, hearing loss and many more.

❇️ *Normal milestone*

🔹 3 month

▪Make a sound like ah, eh, uh. 

▪ Respond to sound by turning head

🔹 6 month

▪️ Responds to own name 

▪️Make a sound like dada, baba

🔹 9 month

▪️ Understand NO

▪️ Makes lot of different sound like baaba, manana

▪️ Try to copy sounds of other

🔹 12 month

▪Follow simple gesture like clapping the hand

▪ Respond to simple request like give me the ball

▪️May speak first word with meaning

🔹 18 month

▪️ Say several meaningful words

▪️  Follow simple command like bring the glass

🔹 2 year

▪ Point to picture or familiar things when named

▪️ Know names of familiar people or body parts

▪️ Say sentence with 2 to 4 words

🔹 30 month of age

▪️ Say a sentence with 3 or 4 words 

▪️ Ask a lot of questions like What, Where or Why?

🔹 3 year

▪️ Talk well with strangers, they can understand easily 

▪️Can name most familiar things almost more than 50 like Fan, Cat, Apple etc. 

🔹 4 year

▪️ Speak clearly

▪️ Can tell name of various color

▪️ Can tell number or alphabet

🔹 5 year

▪️ Can tell simple stories by using full sentences

▪️Say Name, address, mobile number

*❇️ Causes of delayed speech* 

🔹 Lack of stimulation

      ------------------------------- 

Seen more in nuclear families, working parents or disturbed family atmosphere.

 *▪️Solution* 

#  If possible, stay in a joint family.

# Give priority to children rather than job or social responsibility.

# Rather than giving time on social media, spend quality time with your future (Kids).

# Quality time spent with children speeds up brain development. You can learn brain development skills from your Dr.

# Positive family atmosphere is the key.

🔹 Hearing loss

      ---------------------

If your child is having delayed speech then always check for hearing loss even if your child is intelligent and other milestones are normal.

▪️ How to check at home?

# During the first 3 month, if the baby doesn't startle to loud noise.

# After 3 month, the baby does not turn its head towards sound.

# In toddler, if baby does not respond to sound from other room

        ........ then consider hearing screening.

# Cochlear implant

       ...... depends on hearing loss.

🔹  Neurodevelopmental disorder

▪️ Usually physical development is normal, language, social and cognitive is delayed.

▪️ Hearing is normal

▪️ Autism, Down syndrome are commonly found diseases.

🔹 Global developmental delay

▪️ Child is having delayed milestones in all aspects.

▪️It may be due to a lot of reasons like Birth asphyxia.

🔹 Treating underlying condition had been discussed .

🔹 Early stimulation

◻️ Till 18 month

▪️ Try running commentary like I'm going to feed you, we are going outside.

▪️ Say words like ma, da, ba and encourage infants to say them back to you.

▪️ Teach animal sounds like Dog say bo bo.

▪️ Look at your baby when he makes sounds. Talk back to him, and say what he says. Pretend to have a conversation.

▪️ Respond when your baby laughs or makes faces. Make the same faces back to her.

▪️ Teach your baby like clapping hands and playing peek-a-boo.

◻️ 18 month and above

▪️ Speak clearly to your child.

▪️ Encyclopedia means give information.

▪️ Read a story book

▪️ Sing simple song

▪️ Three step speech development

# Show 5 common objects to children like fans, mobile, TV, watch, Fridge for a few days.

# 2nd step- ask a question like where is the fan and once he or she identifies all 5 objects then go to ......

# 3rd step- Now ask what is that by pointing your finger towards the fan. Even though he is not able to speak properly like a fan then also appreciate him.

Now show 5 new objects.

▪️Even if you anticipate their need, give them a chance to say it themselves.

▪️ Encourage your toddler to play with other children.

▪️ Never speak in faulty language with your child.
