What to do if your child complains of Acidity or reflux? Prevention & treatment

ACIDITY IN CHILDREN

GERD or acidity is a common problem in children, probably increasing in the last 10 year due to bad food habits and stress. According to new study, around 2% children are affected below 9 year and 5% children are affected between 10 to 18 year. 

In short... You are not only one to be affected 

🔴 *Symptoms of GERD* 

▪️ Vomiting sensation 

▪️ Intermittent vomiting 

▪️ Chest pain

▪️ Poor eating 

▪️ Hoarse voice 

▪️ Pain while swallowing 

▪️ Sore throat 

▪️ Foul smelling 

Remember... Symptoms are the language of the body problem

🔹 It is always clinical diagnosis 

🔹 Investigation 

It is required if your Dr is suspecting some unusual cause or if a child is not improving to inspire of the treatment. 

▪️ Ultrasound of abdomen 

▪️ Endoscopy 

▪️ Barium meal

🔶 Avoid  food

▪️Spicy food 

▪️ Fried or fatty food

▪️ Packed food items 

▪️ Citrus food like oranges, tomatoes, lemon etc

▪️ Caffeine or Tea

▪️ Junk food

▪️ Garlic and onion 

🔹 Role of parents

▪️ Avoid all such food

In short... An ounce of prevention is better than pound of cure

🔶 Decrease weight 

▪️ Obesity causes pressure on abdomen which causes lower esophageal sphincter loose

▪️ Obese children eat frequent large meal which causes acidity 

🔹 Role of parents 

▪️ Regular exercise 

▪️ Consult paediatrician for treatment 

Remember.... Obesity affect every aspect of life

🔶 Drugs

▪️ Maximum pain killers 

▪️ Antihistamine drugs

▪️ Sedative 

🔹  Role of parents 

▪️ Avoid self medication 

▪️ Always consult Dr for treatment 

Remember.... Self medication causes more harm than benefits

🔶 Lack of sleep 

Sleep not only improves cognitive function of the brain, it restores energy, increases focus & attention span.

🔹 Why sleep is important?  

▪️ Improves immune system 

▪️ Improve overall health 

In short... Sleep is the best meditation 

🔹 Am I getting enough sleep? 

▪️ Difficult in getting up early morning 

▪️ Falling asleep during lecture 

▪️ Feeling tired 

▪️ Feeling irritable 

In short... Minimum 6 to 8 hours of sleep is required 

🔹 How to improve sleep? 

▪️ Try to sleep and wake up at the consistent time 

▪️ Optimize bedroom environment 

# Use the bedroom for sleeping purposes, not for studies, in order to strengthen the association between bed & sleep.

▪️ Do, 's

# Comfortable mattress and pillow are key 

# Good ventilation as per your routine habit.,

️No noise in the bedroom. If not possible to avoid noise, use ear plugs

# Switch off light. If it is not possible to avoid light, use an eye pad.

▪️ Don't 

# No mobile or TV in bedroom

# Avoid coffee or tea before sleep

Remember.... If you are living in sharing room with another student, make timetable to switch off noise and light

Remember... To be in your child's memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today. 

🔶 Busy child syndrome

Maximum children are too busy... 

▪️ Get up at 6.30am

▪️ Go to school around 7.30am and come back around 3pm

▪️ Refreshment for 1 hour, sometimes children are forced to study during this time also. 

▪️ Go to Tuition from 4pm to 7pm

▪️ Play video games or watch TV for 1 hour 

▪️ Self study for 1 hour and go to bed after dinner and use mobile around 11pm. 

🔹 Role of parents 

It is the duty of parents to find balance between school, activities and play (Not mobile). It can mean the difference between a well adjusted child and a stressed out one

Remember.... Your child mental health is more important than their grades

🔶 Clothes 

▪️ Tight fitting clothes create pressure on abdomen for reflux of food into oesophagus 

🔹 Role of parents 

▪️ Avoid it 

Remember... know how to prevent by following guidelines

🔶 Lifestyle modifications 

▪️ Give your child a smaller meal throughout the day rather than 2 or 3 major meals. 

▪️ Avoid eating late night, infact eat at least 2 hours before sleep. 

▪️ Don't lie on the bed after food, if possible - walk for 10 minutes after eating food. 

▪️ Raise the bed from head side by a few inches.

In short... For best result, follow instructions

🔶 Drugs

▪️ Consult Dr for preventive medicine 

▪️ Avoid self medication

❇️ Drug during Acute problem 

▪️ Ask your Dr to write few drugs if your child had Acute vomiting 

▪️ In Spite of medicine, consult Doctor if vomiting is not controlled or intake is poor.
