PREVENTION OF COVID 19 IN CHILDREN 


As corona infection is now spreading in children due to community spread, poor tracing of infected people and home quarantine of infected people so parents are worried about their children's safety. 

Remember... Children less than 5 year are more prone to serious illness 

🔴 Prevent source of infection

Prevention is better than cure so follow all guidelines given below. 

❇️ Stay away from infected person 

      --------------------------------------------------

🔹 If any member in family is having fever, he or she should stay isolated till proper diagnosis is established. 

🔹 If any member is having cough or cold without fever, it is better to stay away from children. 

❇️ Avoid going outside the home 

      ----------------------------------------------

🔹 Don't allow your child to go outside as Corona infection is creating new record daily. 

🔹 Encourage child not to meet any friends even at colony. 

Remember.... Bad things happen if you don't follow rules. 

❇️ Moving out of the home

      ------------------------------------------

🔹 Use seasonal clothes making sure child whole body is cover properly. 

🔹 Use socks for leg and gloves for hand. 

🔹 Teach him to cover his face with proper fitting mask and stay at least 6 feet away from another child. 

🔹 Teach them not to touch any part of face with unclean hand

🔹 Give a small sanitizer bottle and encourage them to use intermittently.

🔹 Encourage to take a bath after coming home.

🔹 Wash their clothes in hot water after coming home. 

Remember... Rules are there to save life. 

❇️ Encourage basic hygiene

🔹 Brushing the teeth twice a day 

🔹 Regular daily bathing

🔹  Encourage your child to wash their hand with soap and water frequently at least for 20 second. 

🔹 Washing hand before taking food. 

Remember... Hygiene is two third of health 

🔴 Boost immunity of the child 

❇️ Proper diet

🔹 Age less than 6 month 

▪️ Exclusive breastfeeding 

▪️ Avoid top milk or complementary feed

🔹 Age 6 month to 2 year

▪️ Start solid food after 6 month of baby age 

▪️ Continue breastfeeding till 2 year of age 

🔹 Age more than 2 year of age 

▪️ Eat as per your old traditional practice (As we used to eat before 1990). Eat a well balanced diet having the right amount of carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamin, mineral and fibre irrespective whether you're vegetarian or non vegetarian. 

▪️ Avoid junk food and sugar. Also avoid deep fried and sweetened drinks. 

🔹 Food which boost immunity against corona infection 

▪️Tulsi

▪️Garlic

▪️Food rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants like Amla, Orange, guava, papaya, beriberi

Remember... Junk food satisfies for minutes but healthy food satisfies forever. 

❇️ Vaccination

       -------------------

🔹 Continue all type of vaccine available at government as well as private hospital. 

🔹 If you had not taken regular vaccine, consult your pediatrician for catch up vaccinations. 

Remember... The children who are vaccinated are less prone to infection 

❇️ Correct deficiency 

      -----------------------------

🔹 Maximum children in India are suffering from Iron, vitamin D or many micronutrient deficiency, consult pediatrician for correction as it help in boosting immunity of the child. 

🔹 Vitamin D and Zinc may help to boost immunity. 

🔴 Take care of health

Health is defined as physical, mental & social well being. Keeping physically safe during COVID 19 is important, it is also important to take care of mental & social health. 

❇️ Physical well-being

🔹 Regular follow up for chronic illness like Asthma, cardiac, brain disease etc. 

🔹 Don't avoid consultation for minor illness ( according to parents) as it may cause major concern in next few days. 

In short... The secret of your future is hidden in your routine. 

❇️ Mental well-being

       ---------------------------

In addition to physical well being, it is important to care for their emotional health. 

🔹 Quality time

▪️Children enjoy time spent with family. 

▪️ You can play a variety of indoor games as per child age and interest.

▪️You can have a lot of creative activities like drawing or writing competitions among family members. 

▪️ Do small things together  on the terrace. Make sure that only family members enjoy the party.

In short... Time spent with children is always worth it.

🔹 Setting routine of the family 

▪️ When children are bored, their level of disruptive behavior increases. So keep them busy by taking services in kitchen or household activities.

▪️ Do regular exercise if possible, all members should participate.

 ▪️ Avoid... Don't use mobile or TV to keep them busy. 

🔹 Provide age appropriate information

▪️ Turn off news channel when children are around 

▪️ Refrain from talking about COVID related situation with anyone in front of the children 

▪️ Children tend to rely on information gathered from the media and friends which may create panic in them. 

▪️ First reassure the safety of all family members.

▪️ Encourage children to ask all their doubts and answer all their queries. 

▪️ Avoid social media for information on diseases.

Remember... Always talk positive in front of the children.

🔹 Do meditation or any form of religious activity together at home. 

❇️ Social well being

Social distancing should not mean social isolation. 

🔹 Social connectedness improves children's chance of showing resilience to adversity. 

🔹 Creative approaches like video calling or online meetings to stay connected are important. 

🔹 Go outside and just say hello, make sure to keep at least 6 feet away from anyone. 

 In short.... Keep in touch without touching 

🔴 Seek professional help

🔹 Fever (As soon as possible preferably on day 1)

🔹 Cough or cold

🔹 Any other illness 

🔹 Behavior changes 

▪️ Lot of temper tantrum 

▪️ Nightmares

▪️ Excessive anxiety 

▪️ Increase aggression 

▪️ Not able to sleep or multiple awakening in the middle of the night 

▪️Decrease appetite 

▪️Staying alone 

▪️ Thumb sucking or head banging.

 In short... Early diagnosis prevents a lot of complications.
